Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)

Learn how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders.
Body

The Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial help and support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis.

MHFA takes the fear and hesitation out of starting these conversations by improving understanding and providing an action plan that teaches people to safely and responsibly identify and address a potential mental health or substance use challenge.

When more people are equipped with the tools to start a dialogue, more people can get the help they need.  Mental Health First Aiders are a vital link, connecting those experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge with appropriate support.

Training Sessions

You only need to register for one training session to receive your certification.

MHFA is offered in two formats. The half-day format splits the seven hours of in-person training across two consecutive days, so participants must attend both days of their selected series. The full-day format completes all in-person training in a single day.

All formats include approximately two hours of online pre-course work and one hour of online post-coursework. Completing all three components earns you an official Mental Health First Aid certificate, which is valid for three years.

Select the date and format that works best for your schedule and register once. For questions, contact wellnesstraining@illinois.edu.
